About the Director
Neil McArthur is a professor of philosophy at the University of
Manitoba and Associate Director of the Centre for Professional and
Applied Ethics. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Southern
California. In addition to various articles, he is the author of the
book David Hume’s Political Theory
(University of Toronto Press, 2007). His first film, Out of the Way (2006), a live
action comedy, premiered at the Calgary International Film Festival.
His short documentary Overburden
(2009, co-directed with Warren Cariou) screened at numerous festivals,
including the Vancouver International Film Festival, the Toronto
World-Wide Short Film Festival, and the San Francisco Green Film
Festival. It was awarded Best Short Film at the Columbia Native
American Indian Film and Video Festival of the Southeast (Columbia,
S.C., November 2010). His medium-length documentary Land of Oil and Water (2009,
co-directed with Warren Cariou) screened at numerous festivals
including ImagineNative and the DOXA Film Festival, and was selected
for the HotDocs Docs for Schools programme. It was nominated for a
Golden Sheaf Award at the Yorkton International Film Festival.
