Facts About “Out of the Way”

The story is based on a true event – Neil really did lose the complete draft of his novel, titled East Hastings, when his computer crashed. It happened after he and Nathan tried to install a CD burner. Nathan felt so bad he did the music on the film for free.

Before it was lost, the manuscript for the novel won Neil an award, the W.O. Mitchell Bursary Award from the Canadian Women’s Press Club, given to a promising young writer who is not yet published.

Neil’s mother helps run an independent publisher, Coteau Books, that is much like Hunger Maven Books.

One of the anecdotes Arthur tells Lisa is true – but it happened to Michael Ondaatje.

Imran Syed, who plays a successful businessman in the film, is a successful businessman in real life. He is a practicing CFP and a partner in one of Ottawa's top wealth management firms.

Liza Stekolnikova, who plays Darya as well as the Underground Man, is a former Olympic ice dancer. She competed at the 1998 Nagano Games.

Producer Kathryn Ready once published a short story in an anthology devoted entirely to stories about menstruation.

The film was shot in May and June 2005. There were a total of six babies born in March and April 2006 to people involved with the film – nine months later!
