The People Behind “Out of the Way”



Neil McArthur (Director, Writer, Producer, “Arthur”)

Neil McArthur is currently a professor at the University of Manitoba. A native of Regina, he holds a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. He spent several years in Ottawa, where he worked as a policy advisor for the federal government and trained in video production through SAW Video. In 2002, Neil was awarded the W.O. Mitchell Award by the Canadian Women’s Press Club, for his unpublished novel East Hastings. The manuscript of this novel was later lost when his hard drive crashed, the event that inspired “Out of the Way”. He is currently at work on a new novel. “Out of the Way” is his first film.


Kathryn Ready (Producer, “Diane”)

Kathryn Ready is currently a professor at the University of Winnipeg. She has a Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Ottawa and has taught at Laval University in Quebec City, the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Okanagan University College in Kelowna, and the University of Windsor. She has interests in creative writing as well as filmmaking.    


Joy Nyveen (“Lisa”)

Joy Nyveen was born in Montreal. She has extensive experience acting for theatre, film and television. She has appeared on the CBC French Canadian TV hit Rumeurs, Jon Dietcher’s “Waiting Room” and she recently finished  working on Frederic Leclair’s “Totem & Taboo”.  Joy has also recently begun producing short films.


Sherry Thurig (“Sylvia”)

A Texas native and "military brat", Sherry Thurig moved frequently as a child but has called Ottawa, Ontario her home since 1986. Sherry began working with ACT, a local acting society, and soon landed her first film role in “An Ocean of Stars”. Since then Sherry has starred in “The Bonesetter”, “Final Curtain” and has made cameos in several films including “Klownz” and “Hunting Season”. She also does modelling work and is active in Ottawa's theatre scene.


Imran Syed (“Liam”)

In addition to acting, Imran is a partner in one of Ottawa's top Wealth Management firm. He writes for the Ottawa Citizen as a financial planning expert and has had numerous articles published in the National Post, Toronto Star, Vancouver Sun, Edmonton Journal and Calgary Herald among others. Recently, Imran was recognized as one of the Top 40 under 40 by the Ottawa Business Journal and was honoured by Carleton University as one of their distinguished graduates. He has been awarded the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) professional designation by the Financial Planner’s Standards Council and currently serves on the board of ADVOCIS, (the Canadian Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors and the Canadian Association of Financial Planners).


Paula Harris Syed (“Victoria”)

Paula is a Manager of Contracts in Accenture's busy Ottawa office. An accomplished actress, she has extensive experience in film, TV and theater. Paula has also achieved her professional certification as a sommelier..


Nena Toth (D.O.P.)

Nena Toth has produced 57 short films and was a Director of Photography in over a hundred short films and videos as well as three features. She won the Best Experimental Film Award at the Niagara Indie Film Festival, the Golden Harp Award from Dublin Ireland and the Grand Prix Award from Portoroz Slovenia. Nena was the first woman Cinematographer in Serbia and Montenegro. She taught at the Academy of Film and Television and Art Muses, FAMU, Prague, Czech Republic and as a guest professor at the Cinema Verite Academy in Ottawa, the University of Toronto and the University of South California of Los Angeles.

Nathan Krentz (Sound Recording and Music)

Nathan Krentz has toured and performed as both an orchestra and rock band musician in Canada and around the world. He has played with numerous orchestras, including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the Regina Symphony Orchestra. He earned his master's degree in music from McGill University. He currently lives in Calgary, where he continues to compose music on his own and for films.

Chan D. Park, Executive Producer

Chan D. Park is a graduate of the University of Regina, the Faculty of Law at McGill University, and the Canadian Film Centre. He has produced several short films as well as the feature-length film “Clutch” (1998), which was distributed by Odeon Films in Canada and sold to HBO in the US. He has also worked at Alliance Communications (now Alliance Atlantis) and at Independent Pictures in Toronto.
